Eco Tourism Sites
Some of the most well known ecotourism sites are Alaungdaw
Kathapa National Park, Popa Mounatin Park, Hlawga Wildlife Park,
Moeyungyi Wetlands, Sein Ye Forest Camp, Myaing Haywun Elephant
Camp, Pho Kyar Elephant Camp, Shwesettaw Wildlife Sanctuary,
Inlay Birds Sanctuary, Inndawgyi Lake Wildlife Park (Kachin
State), Natmataung National Park or Mt. Victoria (Chin State),
Khakaborazi National Park (Kachin State) and Mt. Phonkanrazi (Kachin
State).
About Moeyungyi Wetlands
Moeyungyi Wetlands are situated in Bago Division, about 70
miles north of Yangon, by the Yangon-Mandalay highway. It is
just two-hour drive from Yangon. In 1878 a water storage
reservoir was constructed in Moeyungyi area. Many years later,
the reservoir changed naturally into wetlands with the extent of
40 square miles which have high wetland conservation value. As a
result, the wetlands have been notified as a wildlife sanctuary
since 1988.
Every year, millions of birds usually fly from the northern
hemisphere to the south along the east Asian-Australian Flyway
to escape from winter. They stop to rest and feed in Asia. So
the flyway contains a network of wetlands and Moeyungyi is one
of them.
Moeyungyi is a vital shelter for both resident and migratory
waterfowls. A census at Moeyungyi revealed that there are 125
species of water birds including 70 species of migrants. Little
Grebe, Purple Heron, Grey Heron, Sarus Crane, Asian Open-Bill,
Rubby Shelduck, Purple Swamphen, Spot-Billed pelican, Pheasant
Tailed Jacana, Black Winged Stili, Great Cormorant, etc., can be
seen abundantly.
The best season to visit is from November to March. In
addition to bird watching, you can observe the livelihood of
local populace, fauna and flora of the wetlands.

Myaing Hay Wun Elephant Camp!
Located in Taikkyi Township of Yangon Division. Drive from
Yangon to Taikkyi Township around 90 minutes driving ( 48 miles
) Yangon – Pyay Highway road. Proceed to Myaing Hay Wun Elephant
Forest Camp via Phalon village. Its about ( 27 miles 4 furlong )
by Off-Road 90 minutes driving. Established in 1986.

Elephant, Guar, Banteng, Barking deer, Wild boar, Hare Wild cat,
Green Peafowl, Ruddy sheld duck, Hill myna, Blossom-headed
parakeet, Pheasant, Red jungle fowl, Quail, Dove, Duck, lesser
tree duck, Butterflies, Moths, Snakes, Monitar lizard, Ground
lizard and Chameleon are present.
Opportunities for study and Recreation
- Study of fishes and aquatic creatures in La-har-ma-nge
fishpond and recreation by fishing.
- Viewing of pyinkadoe plantation situated nea Sinte and
listening to the sound of birds and birds watching.
- Hiking and mountaineering in the forest.
- Observing training of domestic elephants.
Trekking
Trekking with elephant about 45 minutes. Along the trekking
journey by riding elephant you will see beauty and serenities of
natural virgin forest its surrounding would be unforgettable.
Elephant Bathe, Elephant Fetching and Medical Treatment
You can visit around the camp including to see how elephant
bathe and washed by their mahouts. Observe the fetching of
elephant in the jungle, how elephant bathe in the stream, the
setting of elephant equipment. You can see how to make the
extraction near the Resort, elephant show, medical treatment of
elephant and discuss care and management of elephant by
veterinarian.

Pho Kyar Forest Resort
Located in Yedashe Township – Thargara. It is 10 miles 2
furlong from Thargara, in the area of Swa forest reserve area,
on the bank of Thaing creek. The resort has 20 acres in area.

From Yangon to Swa Township, Thargara by car is 204 miles. From
Thargara to Pho Kyar Resort the drive by car is 10 miles all
seasons. From Yangon to Taungoo by train is 116 mile. From
Taungoo to Thargara Pho Kyar Forest Resort by car is 26 miles.
Opportunities for study
- To study natural forest plants including different
species of hardwood, large forests teak wood, other valuable
forest plants different life span (middle age – young age)
bamboos, cane and different flora.
- Elephant riding – elephant riding by W shape cradle,
riding by tying the cushion seats on the back of the
elephant, riding around the camp, short trip, long trip
elephant riding, elephant riding overnights in the jungles.

Bathing and washing young elephants, old elephants, mother
elephants and the calves.

Alaungdaw Kathapha National Park
The
Alaungdaw Kathapa National park , one of six sites in Myanmar on
the ASEAN heritage park list , is the home of many wild animals
, including elephants , tigers , deer and variety of rare bird
species .About 100 species of butterfly are also found in this
621 square-mile (1608 sq km) park in Mingin township , about 95
km northeast of Monywa, the capital of Sagaing division .The
park is an ideal area for observing wild life and for conducting
environmental research in the virgin jungle .Recreational
activities include trekking and elephant riding .A wildlife
sanctuary was established in the area 1941 and it was declared a
national park in 1984 . The park is also well-known as the site
where the remains of a highly revered monk named Arahat Kathapa
have been enshrined.

Popa Mountain National Park
Some
67 km from Bagan and about an hour drive from Bagan by road. A
National Park is a perfect place of eco-tourism. It observed of
dry zone ecosystem, Oasis of the Dry Zone. Studying the
naturally regenerated of sandalwood species, geological features
and extinct volcano which about 25,000 years ago. In this place,
wildlife including Monkeys, Barking deer, Wild pig, Jungle cat,
Wild dog and about 140 avifauna species.
Inle Lake (Wetland) Sanctuary (Shan State)
It’s
located at the 688 km from Yangon. We can study world renowned
wetland ecosystem of Inle Lake. The lake, 22 km long and 10 km
cross, has a population of some 150,000, many of whom live on
floating islands of vegetation. Inle Lake, natural and
unpolluted, is famous for its scenic beauty and the unique
leg-rowing of the Inthar, the native lake dwellers. In this
place: migratory birds, 65 species of water birds, other aquatic
plants, animals and 15 species of butterfly.
Indawgyi Lake Wildlife Sanctuary (Kachin State)
It’s
located at the 1235 km from Yangon and can be reached by flight
from Yangon to Myitkyina and then by road. In these place
resident water birds, migratory birds, 120 species of forest
dwelling birds and rare species of fishes, aquatic biology,
butterflies and insects. Observation of wildlife such as
Leopard, Golden Cat, the Malaya sun bear, gaur, wild cow, goral
and escrow. Visit of the largest inland lake of South-East-Asia
in attractive place.
Sein Ye Forest Camp (Bago Division)
Sein
Ye is located at the 266 km south of Yangon. You can study of
Natural teak forest, Elephant riding, working Elephants in
timber extraction and traditional cultural of native peoples.
Observation of wildlife including Elephant, Tiger, Leopard,
Guar, wild Cow, Sun Bear, Wild Boar and resident birds, Elephant
Catching, Training and Recreation in a special forest
environment.
Natmataung National Park or Mt. Victoria (Chin State)
Natmataung
(Mountain) national park is located in Kanpet-let, Mindut and
Matupi townships of southern Chin State. It is Trekking and
Hiking the high mountains in the attractive setting. To preserve
5 species of rare birds this can be found only in Myanmar, other
native and migratory birds their habitats. In this place has
rare species of Myanmar Orchids. Forests include hill evergreen
forests, moist upper mixed deciduous forests, pine forests
(above 9000 feet), and hill savannah. Mammals such as tiger,
bear, wild boar, leopard, escrow, gibbon, etc. and 159 bird
species, reptiles and butterfly are present.

Shwesettaw Wildlife Sanctuary
Shwesettaw wildlife sanctuary is located in Minbu,
Setote-taya, Saku and Ngapeh townships of Magwe division. It
covers an area of 213.4 square miles. Forests include Than-dahat
forest, low indaing (Dry Dipterocarp) forest, and dry deciduous
forest. Bear, Gaur, Sambar, Barking Deer, Shwe Thamin (Gold
color deer), wild cats, wild dogs, birds and the rare Star
tortoises (Geochelone platynota) is also present. Shwesettaw is
pilgrimage and homage to the footprint of Buddha.
Hlawga Wildlife Park
Hlawaga
Park is located in Taukkyan village, Mingaladon Township, Yangon
division. The park includes a wildlife park (818 acres), a
mini-zoo (62 acres) and a buffer zone (660 acres). Approximately
22 miles (35 km) north of Yangon, just west of Yangon - Pyay
road. The park includes semi-evergreen forests, mixed deciduous
forests, and swamp forests. hamin, hog deer, barking deer,
Sambar deer, rhesus monkey, pythons, pangolin, mythun, all have
in the fenced wildlife park. In the mini-zoo, small mammals,
birds, tigers, leopards, bears and estuarine crocodiles are
being displayed more freely in large in spacious cages, aviaries
and moated enclosures, built with modern zoo concept.
Mt. Phonkanrazi (Kachin State)
Mt.
Phonkanrazi is located by 1821 km from Yangon to Putao and then
proceed to 98 km west of Putao. It is Trekking, Hiking and
recreation in the natural forest environment and climbing
snow-capped mountains. It has 30 mammals species, Red Panda,
Takin , Goral and 200 bird species which can be found at high
altitude and East-Himalaya. Studying hill pine forest,
evergreen, forest, medicinal plants and wild rare orchids
including black orchids and the tradition, culture and life
style of indigenous hill tribes.

Khakaborazi National Park (Kachin State)
Khakaborazi
national park is located in Naungmung township of Kachin state,
the northernmost state of Myanmar. It occupies an area of 1,472
square miles. Khakaborazi is the highest mountain in Myanmar
with 29,698 feet in the height and other significantly beautiful
scenery. It is to conserve watersheds in the area where the
Ayeyawady River originates. Forests include evergreen forests,
hill pine forests, and moist upper mixed deciduous forests. In
addition to rare species such as Takin, Musk Deer, Blue Sheep,
Black Barking Deer, mammal species and insects such as
butterflies are present. Khakaboriza is climbing snow-capped
mountains. It is enjoyment of beautiful natural features and
exploration for new plant and animal species. Study traditional
culture, custom and system of l iving of local Rawang, Lisu and
